Peaceful and Pretty find

"The cottage is perfectly situated for seeing many of the beautiful sights in the area. Stunning location with fruit tree's and fields all around. Had everything you could need, microwave, sandwich toaster and very full cupboards of cutlery and crockery. Plenty of space and very comfortable. Great layout and very comfy bed. Owner very friendly and helpful with great knowledge of local area, places to eat and visit. Overall facilities and location are a ten out of ten. Would stay again without hesitation. "

SMUGGLERS KEEP RECOMENDATION.

"THIS WAS A RETURN VISIT TO SMUGGLERS KEEP FOR US. WE THOROUGHLY ENJOYED OUR STAY, AND HAD FANTASTIC WEATHER. THE OWNER WHO LIVES ON SITE WAS AS LAST TIME VERY HELPFUL AND PLEASANT, AND HAS A WEALTH OF INFORMATION ABOUT THE LOCAL AREA. THE COTTAGE CONTAINS EVERYTHING WE REQUIRED AND SOME LOVELY NEW FURNITURE, A BEAUTIFUL NEW SOFA. "

Enjoyable but far too short stay in this well provisioned holiday cottage.

"Enjoyable but far too short stay in this well provisioned holiday cottage. The cottage had everything you could need and great for a quiet getaway and a great base to see the local attractions. Would recommend."

Enjoyable 3-night stay

"Ian was a friendly host. The cottage was clean, well-equipped and attractive, in a pleasant, quiet, country location complete with neighbouring geese and an apple orchard. The bed was comfortable, in a charming bedroom. If we travel that way again, we'd happily stay there again."

:)

"This place was all we needed for our weekend cycling getaway. We were hardly ever at the cottage but it was perfect for a good nights sleep and freshening up in the morning. It's out in the sticks, but still close enough (even by bike!) for plenty of sight seeing - from historic castles to coastlines. "

Hot spot

"We were delighted to stay at Smugglers Keep during record breaking heatwave. We were met by our host, Ian, who showed us round and had thoughtfully put milk and bottle of wine in the fridge. He had provided a fan too. The cottage is equiped with everything you could wish for. Bed and seating comfortable. Hot water at a touch. It was extremely hot and the lovely shady spots in the garden were a bonus. Ian, along with his lovely old dog, Monty, was informative without being invasive, we spent the odd time putting the world to rights. Had some good days out and some lovely meals in local pubs along the road, in Hooe and Pevensey. Would we go again? Absolutely! Planning our next visit. John and Frances"

Holiday stay at Smugglers Keep

"This was a sudden decision to come back here six weeks later Much the same as before with warmer weather. Ian met us on arrival and again most helpful. Over the many years and experiences of holiday cottages this is one of the best. Andrews A "

A curious mixture.

"We found the property a curious mixture. The owner had provided many extras, including a bottle of wine and a (nearly out of date) carton of milk, but did not provide bin bags! I rang him to ask for some, but was told that he provided more extras than most self catering properties and that he didn't provide them; he did, however, bring a couple round - albeit too small for the bin. Also, there was a notice in the bathroom to only use thin toilet paper as the property has a septic tank; there was a full roll on the holder, but no spares were provided. I always take an extra roll of toilet paper when going away, but I don't use the thin type. I also asked the owner about this, and again he said he had provided one but did not offer to bring another one round. I said it would be a good idea to put a comment about this on his property details, so people know in advance. Although clean and tidy, the window above the sink had a bent blind that couldn't be closed, and the window looked as if it hadn't been cleaned in months. However, overall it was well equipped and comfortable and we enjoyed our stay. "

We are glad that despite a few teething issues at the beginning of your stay you had an enjoyable time & would happily recommend. Each home owner offers different extras when providing for guests and as they are self catered accommodation, some items are not provided. We always encourage guests to make enquires before their stay if they need to know what is included on arrival.

Holiday stay at Smugglers Keep

"We knew the area around Battle and Bodiam so the cottage was easy for us to find. We met the owner Ian and he was most helpful showing us the cottage. It was in good condition. One of the best equipped we have been to. Comfortable bed. The weather was dry but at times cold and with the heating on the cottage was most comfortable. It was situated in quiet and not too isolated place. Half a mile from a fast main road and most useful for heading west towards Eastbourne and West Sussex. Other roads were good for visiting places in East Sussex. Thanks Ian and hopefully we will return soon. Would recommend it to anyone A Andrews "

lovely place to stay

"We spent 3 nights while visiting relatives in the area. Ian was wonderful host and the accommodation was excellent. "

Other Reviews

“Lovely cottage, a great base to visit all local attractions. Plenty of places to eat and drink nearby. Very helpful owner offering local knowledge and advice. Also a lovely welcome of milk and a bottle of wine in the fridge.”

“The cottage was a much better base than using a hotel which was our initial option. The cottage was very pleasant, comfortable and well equipped. The bed was very comfortable and a great nights sleep every night. Plenty of space in the cottage to spend time there, again much more useful than a hotel room. Obviously having parking right outside the cottage was helpful. Driving to and from the cottage was easy and there were plenty of tourist sights within a half hour drive, so a great base for exploring the Battle of Hastings area. Ian the owner was always very helpful and friendly and we would see him often, he was always full of ideas and advice for the area. The weather was quite good for our stay which obviously added to the enjoyment of the holiday. As a couple in our mid 40's looking for a relaxing and peaceful place and also somewhere relatively close to tourist sights we were very happy with the property and would recommend it”

“Very good location for rural and seaside, also price is appropriate to 2 berth cottage. Also nicely secluded, not on a holiday camp or main road.”

While the weather during our stay at Smugglers Keep was disappointing, the cottage itself was wonderful. The open-plan kitchen/living room is large and comfortable, and the bedroom is lovely and relaxing too - it's a long time since I've slept as soundly as I did there! There's a nice, private, outside area where you could eat if it was nice, but as I said, the weather wasn't especially kind to us. Thankfully, the radiators kept us nice and toasty! Location-wise, you're really close to Pevensey Castle, Bexhill-on-Sea, Battle and Hastings - all worth a visit. Brighton's a bit further afield, but it's perfectly practical to have a day-trip there if you don't mind driving. If I'm ever taking a holiday in the area in future, I wouldn't hesitate to stay at Smugglers Keep again.

Thank you Ian for a very enjoyable stay. The cottage was fully equipped and we wanted for nothing. You were most helpful right through our stay. We will recommend your cottages and hopefully return soon...with some friends or family.
